I discovered this series of books only days ago and downloaded samples of all six of them. This, being the first in the series, is obviously the one I started with..no prizes for logic, but there it is.
The Tribble twins, Effie and Amy,are living in genteel poverty and decide to embark on a finishing school of sorts for 'awkward' young ladies, with a view to preparing them for 'The Season'and finding them suitable husbands.I don't want to give away the plot but in parts it is laugh out loud (even my other half bellowed somewhat and he doesn't particularly like Jane Austen!)After a series of deft set pieces, the Tribbles are taken under the protection of the very man they wish to snare for their young charge, (the Felicity of the title) although she doesn't make the task easy. The humour is for the most part, character driven, indeed as comic creations go, the Tribbles are as complex as they come.Beyond the sibling sniping, there is a sense of true loss,as we learn that for at least one of the ladies, spinstership was not always an inevitability. I was so happy that George enjoyed the book as much as I did, I went back to buy the others in the series, which had been selling for 99pence each, only to find that they had increased to full price!Alas! The moral of the story is,if you find something you love at a price that's somewhat unbelievable, jump in and buy the lot!
I was ill in bed when I discovered these books and this was a major tonic!
Other books in the series are:Animating Maria (School for Manners)Finessing Clarissa (School for Manners)Enlightening Delilah (School for Manners)Marrying Harriet (School for Manners)Perfecting Fiona (School for Manners)
