This is a beautiful book. Set in the Prohibition era, it's not a time I knew much about, but Franklin and Fennelly really bring it to life.
Dixie Clay is a Bootlegger who is brewing moonshine for her feckless husband Jesse to sell. Into her life comes Ingersoll - a Federal Prohibition agent who gives an abandoned baby before discovering what she really does.
In the background is the ever-rising Mississippi River, threatening to break the levees and flood through the town of Hobnob.
This is an evocative, vivid, gritty, dirty novel and a proper page-turner. Something different and rich in language. To be recommended.
