1.0 out of 5 stars Hip-easy listening at it's worse, 23 Dec. 2001
This review is from: Hotel California (Audio CD)
This has two pretty good tracks - 'New Kid in Town'and 'Life In The Fast Lane'; and one track, the title track, that has interesting lyrics, but is spoiled by the limp reggae beat. (Check out 'Watching the Detectives' by Elvis Costello and 'Police and Thieves' by The Clash for a more productive use of reggae -artists who understood the genre.) The rest of the album is bland, disposable, certainly forgettable, soft rock. Hip-easy listening at it's worst. Ignore this and check out 'The Eagles' and 'On The Border' to find out just how good The Eagles can be. Why this is considered their best album defeats me.

Get a grip mate. This is one of the greatest albums of all time.

Keith Nield says:
Following Desperado, On the Border and One of these Nights, Hotel California was indeed a great disappointment and was considered as such at the time of its release with two stand-out tracks, Hotel California and The Last Resort which topped and tailed the album. The Sounds review of the album also represented this view. I'm afraid that time hasn't been kind to the album at all and repeated listening over the past 34 years hasn't changed my viewpoint.

You're probably tone deaf if you can hear any hint of reggae inthe title track.
A rhythm guitar motif does not reggae make.
As soon as I read that, your credibility went out the window, never to return...

Cannot help but agree with your views here. IMHO one of the most overrated albums of all time. A classic example of an album that sells in droves but musically is easily defeated by other much better albums Pretzel Logic, Sheet Music, Crown of Creation, War babies Secret Treaties etc etc

Michael says:
It is an unpopular viewpoint it seems, but with thousands of classic rock albums in my collection, I'd rate this as pretty average. The title track is fantastic, and a couple of others are ok, but the rest if bland, boring 70s soft rock filler.

Phil Murray says:
I can't see how this is regarded as one of the greatest albums of all time. I think it is dreadful - epitomises all that I hate about 70s country rock/soft rock....takes months to record, is self-indulgent and boring. Couldn't agree with the reviewer more.
