Hammy Acting, Inconsistant but has its moments,
This review is from: Exterminator 2 (DVD)
For the first 40 mins or so I was wondering how is it that Exterminator 2 has something like a 3.5 on IMDB? Because the movie for the action genre was very entertaining. Robert Ginty played it like well Robert Ginty- and his sidekick partner was always welcome on screen. The movie was able to take me to New York mid 80s with its nightclubs, synch music et all. I WAS enjoying the film.
Alas the second half is a major letdown, that includes a twenty minute slowburning finale.
Aside from the hammy acting, there is just too many inconsistancies, that make no sense. In fact thats the connection with the superior original- how did he know the gang member he caught was connected to the guys that he wanted? There is also a scene or two near the end where bad guy Mario van Peebles refuses to pull the trigger and kill our hero.
As for van Peebles, though he improves slighty as the film goes on, hes a bit of a disaster here. Lording it up like a villian straight out of the Mad Max movies, but on the streets of New York- do me a favour.
Exterminator 2 isn't a complete failure, there are some nice touches here and there. You just wish the second half of the film had been completely rewritten and that Ginty's character would show some emotion when obviously needed.
I watched the shout factory edition of this movie, which looks to be uncut. The picture is outstanding too.
All in all if you liked the first movie you should like this one. Probably deserves a 2.5 from 5 stars.
