A Patchwork Quilt!,
This review is from: Flying Colors (Ltd) (Dig) (Audio CD)
This is not a bad first effort from the newest prog supergroup Flying Colors. There are some excellent songs ('Blue Ocean', 'Shoulda Coulda Woulda', 'Kayla' and 'Everything Changes'), some fairly good songs ('The Storm', 'Love Is What I'm Waiting For', 'Better Than Walking Away', 'Infinite Fire') and a couple of clunkers ('All Falls Down', 'Fool In My Heart'). I like Casey McPherson's voice - it works really well on this album and I'd like to check out his work with his group Alpha Rev on the strength of this. Both Morses - Neal (ex-Spock's Beard / Transatlantic) and Steve (Deep Purple / The Steve Morse Band) - are just sublime. Dixie Dregs / Steve Morse Band stalwart Dave LaRue gives a solid performance on bass and he works well with the percussive tornado that is Mike Portnoy. I hear that the group was together for nine days to compose and record this album - it shows in places. Rather than weave a colour-rich tapestry, they have turned out a patchwork quilt. But it's a decent piece of work, well-crafted and practical. This album's a grower and well worth a listen.

I agree that Fool in My Heart is a clunker, but I quite like All Falls Down. Basically, it's just a chance for them to shred.
