My Only Vice?,
This review is from: The Human Menagerie (Audio CD)
I know using a title of one of the songs is not very original but given that I've only awarded 4 stars it could be justifiable in a surreal kind of way? This review is for the release that contains Judy Teen (plus Rock & Roll Paradice) as I understand that a few others exist. This is just as well (Judy Teen) or this very good album may never have been purchased at all and nearly wasn't when I saw the very dubious cover. What was Steve Harley thinking of? My only other quibble is the use of violins in rock music and Cockney Rebel are in my opinion the only ones to actually pull it off even if only briefly. Roxy Music tried, as did Curved Air with varying degrees of success. Apart from the immortal Sebastian and Judy Teen there really are some excellent songs here, especially Crazy Raver, Hide Away, Mirror Freak and Death Trip. Not many possess instantly recognisable vocal delivery but Steve Harley is certainly one them, off the top of my head another is certainly Alex Harvey. Steve Harley proves that he is a talented songwriter and was astute enough to know when to move on. Finally, I remain unconvinced about the often used 'glam' rock tag, not until Come Up And See Me was released anyway. Whilst not exactly a classic this album deserves a place in most collections so give it a try as could well be very surprised in a nice way.
