violence, discomfort and more violence,

This review is from: Batavia's Graveyard (Hardcover)
This must be one of the best stories I've ever read.
I knew nothing of this before I read the book, but now have an understanding of the Dutch Empire; Dutch East India Company; the role of an apothecary; life aboard ship in that period; the issues associated with sailing around Cape of Good Hope; and, of course, the main theme of the story of mutiny. The details of savagery and violence are beyond comprehension. Life must have been much more precarious and fragile in those days and the brutal events that played out during the voyage and after the ship breaking up on the coral reef are quite astounding.
