The Greatest JCS ever,
This review is from: Jesus Christ Superstar (Audio CD)
This JCS is the first ALW musical and in many ways the best - in audio.
It was heartbreaking to Murray Head's fans like me that he decided to make a movie instead of doing this show. He is superb on stage! (But those who have taken the part in his place were very good also, not dissing them at all.) At least he finally did something of Tim Rice's in the splendid musical Chess! And he's been "big" in France for many years including singing Superstar at a "French prom" in I think 2007 - you can find it on You Tube. He has a special, almost casual style that none of the others who've sung Superstar have ever come up to. However, the song that grabbed me most on this recording is when he's raging at the fate that has condemned him to "murder Christ" - how unfair, someone had to do it or Christ wouldn't be able to be "the Savour"... "Why me?" One of the most poignant songs ever.
When I heard the LP set the first time, I was simply electrified. It's amazing. At last I can get a CD update of it.
One of the most important aspects to me of music after the quality of the music itself and the performances is the sound quality. This is superb. We all know that ALW was very particular about this kind of thing. The sound at the Starlight Express musical was awesome! These days 2013 we expect it to be good. Back then it was pretty variable what you'd get. The musical Chess for example didn't have the best sound in the theatre and I think it didn't have that much money behind it, but anything from ALW anywhere you can rely on quality all the way through.
