This excellent twofer offers the third and fourth albums from Britain's premier blues artists, the Blues Band, at a very reasonable price.
When the band formed in 1979, the members had each already enjoyed distinguished careers, notable Paul Jones and Tom McGuiness with Manfred Mann, and Dave Kelly who had worked with the complete roster of Chess Blues legends. They had talent and experience in spades, as well as an easy camaraderie which allowed them to work well as a unit and produce some great music.
The pace of their early albums was quite frenetic, with some real up-tempo classics. With a variety of well chosen covers (Bob Dylan's Maggie's Farm for example) and some excellent original compositions, the albums are well paced, well played and entertaining. Jones in particular stands out, with his instantly recognisable vocals and some really superb harmonica breaks. I have always rated him as one of the finest harp players I have heard, and time and time again on these albums he gets to show off his skills. The band was not afraid to mix it up a bit, and occasionally the odd jazzy flavour or soul tendency creeps in. It all works really well.
