This review is from: The Book Bind (Kindle Single) (Kindle Edition)
In a way there is something ironic about this kindle single. The focus of the article is a non-profit publishing project, called Ugly Duckling Presse, created in the 1990’s by a collection of poets and artists. Their aim is to ‘create permanence in a world overrun by impermanence.” Indeed, the very name ‘Ugly Duckling Presse’ came about through their desire to publish those books which were not considered by mainstream publishers. They are housed inside a refurbished can factory, where over 200 artists, artisans and publishers share space. Inside, those with the passion for publishing hand bind books, while the author professes a desire to reach out and smudge the ink on the page...
This is a very interesting kindle single about publishing, in a time when mainstream publishing is more and more linked to modern technology. Yet, although I downloaded this book and read it on a kindle, it does not suggest that there is no place for technology in the publishing world. Rather that there is also a place for smaller publishers and for bookshops. The author muses on internet retailers, the loss of bookstores, poetry readings and the love for the written word – which all readers share. An interesting read for all booklovers.
