Fun to read, but insubstantial,

This review is from: Plum Lovin' (A Stephanie Plum novel) (Hardcover)
It's hard to know where to place these 'between the numbers' stories. They are only half the size of the 'numbers' novels and so are bound to be different. It's a question of what those differences are, and how much of what we enjoy is still there. At times it did feel to me as though Plum Lovin' had been written in a hurry. In places where readers of the 'numbers' novels would expect more - more action, more speech, even simply more descriptions of looks and attitude - the action moves on and you can't help feeling that you're only skimming the surface and not really getting involved with the characters in the way we now expect. On the other hand, it was still great fun and Diesel is a welcome addition to the cast. I think perhaps 'between the numbers' should be read as 'between meals': indulgent, tasty treats that whet the appetite for something more substantial.
