Dirk Bogarde is right - this is a radiant book and one to return to when you feel the need for a bit of sunshine (Gerald Durrell's 'My Family and Other Animals" occupies a similar slot on my bookshelf).
Michael Jenkins does not gloss over the human foibles of the elderly aunts and uncles (apparently fictional, but somehow one feels they are more real than imagined), but the good natured and loving attitude of the visitor to to his hosts are rare and refreshing qualities in teenage interaction with old age, and probably explain why the elderlies took him to their hearts.
