This review is from: Seeking The Dead: Number 1 in series (Joe Plantagenet) (Hardcover)
Readers of Kate Ellis' Wesley Peterson books will be familiar with her unique blend of history and the present, and with this first novel in a new series featuring Detective Inspector Joe Plantagenet (great name!) the theme is continued. This time however, there is also an underlying touch of the supernatural, which adds spice to the storyline without dominating the plot.
The tale is set in the historic Yorkshire city of Eborby. Joe Plantagenet is faced with a serial killer with macabre methods, has a female boss who appears to be struggling with the dual role of mother and Senior Police Officer, and is tasked with the responsibility of keeping an eye on the daughter of a murdered former colleague who has just started to live and work in the city. Despite all this, he has time to begin to develop a love interest during the course of the book.
Those familiar with the real city of York will be able to walk the streets of Eborby along with the characters without difficulty! Like all of Kate Ellis' novels there is a strong storyline which moves along at a cracking pace, but the main characters are developed much more slowly, their personal lives gradually revealed to the reader, but leaving much more to be said as the series continues. This is an excellent start to the new series, and hopefully, it won't be too long before we get another opportunity to meet Joe and company.
