This review is from: The Chosen Dead (Coroner Jenny Cooper Series) (Hardcover)
I enjoyed his earlier books and was looking forward to a new one.
I found the plot convoluted and beyond plausible. If you like conspiracy theories then maybe it's more your thing than mine. I felt that having done all the scientific research he had to show he knew it all in the book - bit like doing your academic coursework and wanting to put in a quote from every book you have read but missing the point in the process.
With a continuing series with a back story I like a bit of character development but Jenny never changes, her interactions with her son and ex husband are painfully predictable and she has just become tedious. Pity because the earlier books were so promising. Not going to be reading any more of this series.

Sorry Jane one quality you cannot ascribe to M.R.Hall is predictability. It seems at one point as if the author had decided that Alison was to be written out of the events but no she comes in charging forward always protecting Jenny from the monsters. The description of the Gloucestershire countryside in winter is so beautiful.
Jenny is a great character and the image of her waking up in a strangers bed with only wearing her knickers is such a powerful one bearing mind her position as coroner.
The women towards the end of the book emerge as forceful characters and really pull the strings in this book.
The author brings in the position of the majority of European immigrants who want to settle down here and work hard in honest occupations but find themselves looked at with suspicion because of the criminals who
think this country is another branch of their evil empires . The author is aware of the contemporary social problems.
