This review is from: Necroscope II: Wamphyri! (Kindle Edition)
Let me start by saying I love the Necroscope series of books. I read them when they were first released in paperback, and now I'm working my way through them on Kindle.
There is a problem with this Kindle version of the book, however - it is littered with typos. My guess is that this is due to the original hard copy text being scanned with optical recognition software - that would explain errors such as some instances of a capital I in italics being replaced with /. There are many other errors too.
However, these errors don't really detract from what is otherwise a highly entertaining horror romp. For my money, Lumley's vampires are the best - no soul searching romantics, just thoroughly evil bastards! What I do find distracting in Lumley's work is his tendency to use commas as conjunctions, and his habit of having characters start dialogue with 'well, and...' If it was just one character who had that habit of speaking, then fine. But it just crops up unexpectedly with diverse characters from diverse backgrounds. Strange.
There is no getting away from the fact that this is an excellent story, though, with some interesting characters. Yulian Bodescu is a memorable vampire, and the background to the older vampires is fascinating. The story slows a bit when the action switches POV between multiple characters, some of who aren't so well delineated, but nevertheless, one is carried along by the urgency of the action.
