This review is from: The Holocaust Industry: Reflections on the Exploitation of Jewish Suffering (Paperback)
Until comparatively recently, I implicitly accepted the image of the holocaust and its victims that was presented by the mass media. Then, a year ago, I read the Penguin Book of Twentieth-century Speeches, in particular some of what Elie Weisel had to say about the holocaust.
It was clearly exaggerated, sentimentalist nonsense. I began to think a little more independently about the issue, but had nowhere to turn for a more balanced view.
One day, Amazon's recommendations system suggested this book to me, and I bought it at once. Having read it, I'm delighted to be able to recommend it unreservedly as exactly the book I needed.
Finkelstein does not deny the Nazi holocaust, nor the suffering it inflicted on both those it killed, and on those who survived. His contention - persuasively argued - is that their genuine suffering is being debased and abused by the Holocaust "industry" in order to bring political power and huge sums of money to an élite minority.
He also points out that by labelling the Holocaust with false superlatives, one belittles the plight of others who have suffered comparably awful genocide and victimisation, both in World War II and throughout history.
The book is well written. Finkelstein occasionally personalises the debate, or becomes less than dispassionate, but I never once felt this damaged his objectivity. He quotes sources throughout the book - in many cases his opponents are condemned by their own tongues.
It is time the media stopped pandering to the abusive interests of the Holocaust Industry, time they took a more balanced, more critical and less sensationalist view. Billions of dollars are being extorted from governments (even those that can hardly afford it, such as Poland's) by the playing of the Holocaust and anti-Semitism cards. This is unjust.

The first 1939-45 war atrocity labelled a "Holocaust" was the 1942-3 artificial famine created by the British in Bengal which, according to latest research by Sanjoy Bhattacharya at the Welcome Foundation, killed 6-7 million Indians. In the last 67 years the British have largely hushed up this holocaust for which Winston Churchill should be held responsible (see Gideon Polya's articles on the internet) - only once in 1997 did British TV deal with it in the Channel 4 Secret History series. Compare this with the incessant rehashings of the so-called "Holocaust" on BBC, only this week reporting on North London teenagers visiting Auschwitz etc. - Addendum- September 2010 - new book called Churchill's Secret War by M. Mukherjee published in USA exposing Churchill's racist attitude towards Indians exacerbated this famine holocaust refusing to send aid. This was only the last of numerous such famine holocausts inflicted by the Brits in India - See Late Victorian Holocausts by Mike Davis and his Ghosts in the Dust of Gujarat on the Observer website etc. Hitler's favourite film was Lives of a Bengal Lancer and he wrote in Mein Kampf that he wanted Ukraine as Germany's India! The Raj apologists can't pretend that the Brits were that different from Nazis, see George Monbiot on the web about how, when finally forced to act on Famine (rather than hold the biggest feast in human history as he did in 1877) Lord Lytton gave less food to starving Indians -forced to do hard labour -than Nazis gave to death camp inmates in Buchenwald. Not all Nazi camps had gas chambers. 94% of the Indians died as of course they were meant to.

Lucky you for being able to smell the rat that is Elie Weisel so early on. I blame the likes of Oprah for shining a halo over his head and duping us gullible housewives into thinking there was substance where there was shameless posturing and sinister exploitation behind his efforts. His foundation is part of the industry that has exploited the suffering of the jews and he sides with so called academics such as Alan Dershowitz who peddle in propaganda and lies.

The tragic events now known to history as 'The Holocaust' can only inspire horror and regret. To my mind however the books/DVD's now being produced by the previously mentioned 'Holocaust Industry' all omit one crucially important point, which massively influences how these events are viewed by the modern world. The real question is not whether the Holocaust occured; we all know/regret that it did; but was it was a deliberate act? As ever more historical evidence becomes publicly available, this newly released information clearly demonstrates that the 'dogma' of deliberate genocide in 'death camps' was a gross emotional simplification, used at the time of the Nuremburg trials, to justify Allied actions in WW2 by literally demonizing the defeated German leaders; who were then promptly executed to prevent their future reply. The historical reality is both more complex, but more easily understood today.

The major underlying cause of European instability in the century preceding WW2 was the population explosion of the Victorian era, which had accompanied the Industrial Revolution. By the 1870's Europe could no longer feed all her people from her own soil, and became increasingly dependant on food imported from around the world to make good the ever growing deficit. This looming food shortage was the driving force behind both the Imperialist expansion/colonization programmes, and the pre-WWI Anglo-German naval race; by which Germany attempted to build a counterbalance to the Royal Navy, and thus end Britain's ability to induce famine in Europe, threat of which the British Empire used to influence European events. This naval rivalry, based as it was on mutual fear of national starvation was a major cause of WWI. At it's outbreak in August 1914, the British began enforcing this naval blockade in earnest, intent on starving Germany to heel. By November 1918 the blockade had done it's job; a million German civilians had already died, millions more were starving, civilian morale had collapsed; and despite her armies being undefeated in the field, Germany surrendered.

On their assumption of power in 1932, artificially induced famine and/or an oil embargo were the greatest fears of the Nazi Government; and played a large part in the decision to launch 'Operation Barbarossa'; objectives? the Ukrainian grainfields and the Soviet oil reserves at Baku. By 1943 it was obvious that Barbarossa had failed and that the Anglo-American naval blockade, this time greatly strengthened by the strategic bombing campaign; would again cause mass starvation in Europe. The only choice left to the Nazi high command was who would get what food there was, and which unfortunates would be the first to starve. As their sea and air fleets continued to starve and devastate Europe, does anyone today really believe that Churchill and Roosevelt were unaware of who the Nazis would ensure suffered first?

In 1945 however, with the war won and the grim results of their wartime decisions being broadcast far and wide to a horrified world; it is also clear why these events HAD to be portrayed by the victors at Nuremburg, as the deliberate action of depraved Nazi psychotics; rather than the unfortunate by-product of what was in other respects, highly successful Allied strategic planning.

Brian Flange says:
Re: the Bengal famine - by 1943, Britain's administration in the east was reeling from catastrophic defeats in Burma and Singapore, and the weather conditions in 1942 were ideal for the spread of the virulent rice disease known as "brown spot". The government apparently did make serious efforts to engage with the famine, e.g. providing millions of free meals. However, while mismanagement there undoubtedly was and the results were an appalling human tragedy that probably cost at least three million lives, to compare the Bengal famine to the deliberate genocide of the Holocaust is simply not sustainable.

Just as importantly, even if the facts had been exactly as stated in the initial comment above, the sufferings of the people of Bengal do not licence any down-playing of the sufferings of other peoples and it is not under any circumstances acceptable to refer to the "so-called" Holocaust. Pardon me reiterating all this but a few more facts: There were six million Jewish people killed in the Nazi Holocaust, plus five million (or more) Romani, homosexual, Polish, Slavic, Jehovah's Witness, Jesuit and so-called 'genetically damaged' (sic) people either killed in Nazi concentration camps or by their Einsatzgruppen. Add to that the twenty million combatants and approximately forty million civilians killed in the war the Nazis started and the Hitler death-toll outstrips even the appalling death-toll to be laid at (e.g.) Stalin's door.
(Roughly 58% of the total dead in WW2 were civilians on the Allied side, as opposed to 4% civilian deaths on the Axis side. The corresponding figures for military deaths are 25% Allied and 13% Axis.)

Oh and two things, Mr. Bradbury:
i) Nazi Germany was committed to a policy of expansion that could only be achieved by mass extermination and aggressive war - it's no accident Hitler's accession to power was quickly followed by anti-Semitic legislation, round-ups of political opponents and then an invasion of Eastern Europe. Likewise, genocide was not a short-term or unpremeditated measure that arose in Nazi Europe as a response to the pressures of war but an integral part of the Nazi programme from the very outset.

ii) it's actually "Nuremburg" - with an 'm', Mr. Bradbury.

Nate, you are deeply deluded.
I'm surprised you didn't also cite that well-known Black Hundred forgery the Protocols of the Elders of Zion.
Anti-Semitism is vicious nonsense.
