This review is from: End of the World in Breslau: An Eberhard Mock Investigation (Kindle Edition)
This is the second book featuring Criminal Counsellor Eberhard Mock, (the first is Death in Breslau: An Eberhard Mock Investigation). The bulk of the storyline is set in 1927, when Mock investigated a series of macabre murders. This is no straightforward crime book though - this is noir at its best; a dark, atmospheric and seedy account of a place and a time. Breslau is almost a character itself; with crime, poverty, drugs and murder stalking the streets. As Mock attempts to discover who is responsible for the violent murders, he finds a link to a sect which is predicting the end of the world.
It is almost Christmas, but Mock is severely lacking in festive spirit. His marriage is disintigrating, he is drinking too much and his family relationships are strained. The author weaves interlinked storylines involving Mock's wife, his nephew and the crimes into a dark and satisfying read. I can see why some people find these books confusing and they are certainly not an 'easy read', but I find them both satisfying and evocative. If you are looking for literary crime novels which are well written and original, this is a great series to try.
