Good book - but could have been better...,
This review is from: Swordhunt: 3 (Star Trek: The Original Series) (Mass Market Paperback)
The Rhinsu series is perhaps one of the strongest explorations of the Romulan culture and of any culture in the Star Trek series. Sword Hunt is the latest additon to this series although it was published over a decade later from the last one. The book previous to this one was an solid indepth look at Romulan history, what drove the Romulans, key parts of its history and social changes - fantastic stuff.
Swordhunt had a lot to live up to, it has faltered a bit. The mixing of the Romulan and Federation crew aint go the same effect that it had in the first book - my reaction is now oh look Uhura is singing some nice songs and the Romulans and Federation are exchanging humours anecdotes. The Romulan weapon that creates ion storms or something doesnt feel that threatning - its as if Kirk knows that the weapon wont affect any planets outside those mentioned by the book - so he casually discusses it like he's studying a nebula or something. The Romulans elsewhere on Romulas are doing their usual scheming which is quite enjoyable to read.
Its a good book yes, but its not got the same strength is predecessors have. Books 3 and 4 of the Rhinnsu series could have been merged instead of relying on oversided margins and font to balloon it into two books. The fourth book creates the real cliffhanger...
