3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, 8 Mar 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: The Magic Flute: The Metropolitan Opera (Levine) [DVD] [2011] [NTSC] (DVD)
Fabulous costumes and scenery, beautiful singing with no expense spared on anything, but the overture is cut short and several of the best, most memorable arias have been cut altogether. I find it odd that in such a lavish, extravagant production, the Metropolitan Opera has decided it knows better than one of the greatest composers of all time.

Mark Twain says:
This version was produced with children audience in mind and was shown at the Met at day time. This is why we have English and the cuts.

Bought this version a while ago and absolutely love it-abridged maybe but classy nonetheless. To say 'several of the best, most memorable arias have been cut' is rather an exaggeration surely? which memorable arias are missing?

I miss a few ensembles, such as the "farewell" trio (Pamina - Tamino -Zarastro) and 2 armed men's duet. Would rather cut some Papageno antics, but kids would not approve:-)
