First of all I would mention I am not a sportswoman just an amateur photographer who likes to carry most of her gear in one bag. Therefore I can't comment on whether the hydration side pocket is a good thing or bad.
When I first unpacked the Lowepro 20L I thought it wouldn't cater for my needs due to the fact it looked no bigger than the ones I already had. How wrong I was.
When I actually unzipped the bag I was very pleasantly surprised at how roomy and deep it was. I put in my heavy telephoto lenses plus 2 camera bodies and literally filled the bag with all my photographic possessions. However I could hardly lift it, the bag is quite light so it was all my equipment! I had to compromise. In my bag I now have Canon 24-105, canon 100mm, Canon 17-40, a standard lens, filter ring and adaptor, cloth, filters , spare batteries, 5d mark II with 50mm lens attached, remote release and still there is room. I have also attached my tripod at the side so for me I have got virtually everything I need in one bag and can carry it comfortably due to the wide straps.
For me the great thing is that the body can be opened fully unlike my Lowepro flipside 400AW which never really lived up to my expectations despite having good reviews. With the Lowepro 20L It is also extremely easy to open the bag whilst on your body providing you make sure you have secured the strap which goes round the waist. Just unhook your shoulder straps and bring the bag round to the front of your body and there you have easy access. No risk of sand getting on your gear!
The bag doubles up to a rucksack so you can just lift out the inner bag containing all the gear and set it aside. This inner part has a drawstring and and large enough to completely cover the equipment whilst not being used. The rucksack can now be used for an alternative purpose - very clever and you still have the attached waterproof protection which is hidden away on the underneath of the bag which is usual with Lowepro..
The whole bag being extremely well made, feels really secure on your back and is very well padded and ventilated and therefore comfortable to carry around . The front outside compartment is very roomy and is actual two compartments i.e. one behind the other, the larger one being at the back and access to each one is through zips on either side. The large inside compartment which has the padding from the back to protect it is ideal for an ipad which it is designed for.
I chose the blue bag because it is a mid blue/greyish colour and therefore not something which could immediately attract the attention of thieves so this is worth bearing in mind when choosing your colour. I was very tempted by the bright orange one as it looked extremely vibrant but in the end had to be sensible.
All in all this is an extremely well thought out bag and has made all my other bags redundant. I have collected many bags over the years and very few have lived up to expectations either being too small or with design flaws. For me, my search for the perfect bag is finally over the Lowepro Flipside Sport 20L AW ticks all the boxes. Time for a clear out. A great bag at a good price. Highly recommended
