Good, but too short for an album,
This review is from: Premiers Symptomes (Audio CD)
This album feels a bit like a continuation of Moon Safari, so if you've heard that album you'll have a pretty good idea of what to expect.
The opening track, Modular Mix, is for me the best on the album. Beautiful effects that have to be heard to be believed. It's an electronic sound, but without sounding too digital or artificial. Another outstanding track is Soleil Est Pres de Moi. Beautiful electric pianos and use of the vocoder combine to create a delicate, sumptuous sound. Unfortunately it's just too repetitive.
For me, Air seem to have two distinctive sounds; the one that sounds like Zero 7, and the other one. An example of the Zero 7 sound is All I Need from Moon Safari, and tracks 2- 4 are example from this album. That isn't a bad thing, but I prefer Air when they are distinctly Air, sounding unlike no other band. Of these three tracks, J'Ai Dormi Sous l'Eau is the best.
Californie is a nice mellow tune (after the loud and sudden start) but not one of the strongest, and Brakes On offers a dramatic deviation in style with a fuzzy baseline and heavy beats. Doesn't really sound like Air but a good funky tune nonetheless.
With only seven tracks and about 33 minutes (I didn't get the two remixes on my version) this is way too short for an album, if you can call it that. It feels more like the leftovers from the recording of Moon Safari, which I think it is. Despite this I think it just about warrants the four stars.
