Purpose built - Built with purpose !,
This review is from: Purpose Built (Audio CD)Having made his home in London for the last few years,American bassist Janisch has finally made his debut CD as a leader and what a great one it is too.
Combining the talents of British and American muscians he has created a terrific album of post bop and straight ahead jazz. With Britains Paul Booth(tenor sax),Jim Hart(vibes) and Phil Robson(guitar) and from the USA Walter smith III (tenor sax),jason Palmer(trumpet) and Patrick Cornelius(alto sax) provide most of the solos. The tunes are mostly Janisch originals and he draws on a wide range of influences for his highly creative arrangements.
"Shumshi" is without doubt the most adventurous piece of the session with Smith providing a hard edged bordering on free form solo that never seems to run out of ideas."Adelante" is based around a very simple melody that will be going round and round in your head for days on end and "Precisely now" for me is the pick of the album with great solos from both Booth and Smith. There is a nice, and very different, arrangement of Miles Davis's "Milestones" and Aaron goldberg gets to showcase his talents with a nice couple of piano trio pieces. There are many other high points but i will leave you to discover those for yourself.
The sound quality is good and the running time is long at over seventy three minutes and the muscianship from all concerned is superb.
