I found the book a little confusing at first. It was some time since I read the Steel Remains, which I loved, and this is very dependent upon having read SR first and remembered all of the characters. As with all of his books Steel Remains takes on some social issues. Having two gay central characters in fantasy / sf must be a first? The way he tackles race, cloning and even politics in his SF is superb. However this follow on was a romp without new ideas. The mystical elements were confusing and the pacing was poor with a bizarre final victory that came out of nowhere. It also owes somewhat to Ian Banks "Culture". Having said that I remain a big Morgan fan.
