Seriously good cake book,

This review is from: Red Velvet Chocolate Heartache: The ultimate feel-good book of natural cakes that taste naughty (Hardcover)
The recipes in this book are really good. There are only a couple that I didn't think worked, I'll go into them later. The book is really clear and the recipes are a great way to use up gluts of veg or just get more veg into your diet.
The cakes are mostly lovely sticky soft gooey in texture like a muffin.
Our favourite recipe is the Light Chocolate cake which has become our family birthday cake. I've even doubled the recipe and used it in a train shaped cake tin without problems. Its the perfect sticky/soft chocolate cake and keeps perfectly for up to about a week so ideal for birthday as you can easily make it the day before. We also really love the beach and blanket fruit cake (i make it with out the almond essence as we prefer this).
I have to add that pretty much every recipes requires eggs to be beaten with sugar to a large volume, I have had several batches of the chocolate cake where the eggs refused to whip up and it hasn't affected the cake at all, they are pretty resilient to mistakes.
The recipes I thought failed were the carrot based ones such as the carrot cake and the coffee cake. Both had unpleasant flavours and textures and I have tried each several times. Kind of gritty and dry and not like any of the other recipes I tried from the book. Much better carrot cakes are found in just about every other general cook book around.
Also I would just say her icings are ever so sweet. I halved the sugar in some of them and they are still very sweet. She must have a super sweet tooth.
