The Lyrical Spectrum of Jack Vance,
This review is from: Jack Vance SF Gateway Omnibus: Big Planet, The Blue World & The Dragon Masters and Other Stories (Sf Gateway Library) (Paperback)
While I'd love to see Gollancz reissuing the best of the novels/stories they collect in the Gateway omnibuses as A format paperbacks at £5.99 (that's the pocket size that SF books routinely were until the 1990s), I'll state without reservations that despite their ugly design and oversize royal-format trade paperback presentation, these are books that all serious SF readers should buy to complete their education in the genre.
This omnibus comprises two of Vance's colourful and lyrically imaginative novels and a story collection headed by his nebula award winning tale "The Dragon Masters".
Vance was a master storyteller with a real facility for language, inventing nomenclature and describing people and exotic places of his boundless imagination with great skill - he's the sort of writer that Shakespeare would have admired, almost tireless in his majestic magic
For an introduction to a great SF master, you can't go wrong here. Recommended particularly to fans of Silverberg's majipoor series, China Mieville and Jeff Vandermeer.
