Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Avro Vulcan Manual: An Insight into Owning, Restoring, Servicing and Flying Britain's Legendary Cold War Bomber (Owner's Workshop Manual) (Haynes Owners' Workshop Manuals) (Hardcover)
I flew the Vulcan for over 5 years, initially as a co-pilot on IX Squadron and then as a captain on 27 Squadron, and spent many happy hours flying Vulcan XH558, which is the subject of this book. This Haynes manual contains much interesting background information about how the Vulcan was operated, plus the story of how Dr Robert Pleming and his "Vulcan to the Sky" team restored it to flying condition and had it accepted on the civil register, which was no mean feat. However, I always keep a copy of the book to hand as a reference to remind myself of the many details of the aircraft - exactly where was that control, where was that instrument? - and the excellent cut-away drawings are invaluable when explaining to non-Vulcan aircrew exactly how the Vulcan worked. The Vulcan was well ahead of its time, and many of its systems were unique in their design and largely incomprehensible to present-day aviators!
I lent my first copy of the Vulcan Haynes Manual to a friend, but it never returned and I have forgotten which friend; however, I don't hold it against him because this is such a useful book that a little minor thievery is probably justified! I couldn't be without it, so this purchase is my second... and I am sure not the last.
