3.0 out of 5 stars Stunning Scenery, Amazing Animals, Melodramatic Music, 3 Feb. 2012

This review is from: Yellowstone [DVD] (DVD)
Until I saw this documentary, my impressions of Yellowstone Park had been formed by Yogi Bear.
The Yellowstone DVD, is an eye-opener, even to an avid David Attenborough fan like me. An elk out-witting the wolves; a coyote stealing the otters' trout; a fox catching a mouse through six feet of snow, all beautifully filmed against an incredible backdrop.
The DVD opens with the winter season - and harsher winters than those in Yellowstone are hard to find. The scenery throughout the film is fantastic, the ice crystal rainbows hanging in the air; the bison rummaging in the snowdrifts; the otters 'snowboarding'; and of course, the geysers, the boiling mud, the hot lakes, everything that is Yellowstone.
Peter Firth's eloquent narration describes the day to day problems and joys of life in Yellowstone in a way that echoes the already dramatic images. The music is a tad over-powering, note to the BBC, turn it down, or tone it down.
Along with the wildlife, we are introduced to the humans who help run the Yellowstone experience - the guy whose job it is to shovel snow off the rooves; the "geyser-gazers", people who sit and watch geysers, and report on their activity; and, the Public ("Americans!" as my wife says).
It's long, it's entertaining, and it's informative - what else do you need?
Would have got four stars if it wasn't for the music.

You gave Yellowstone a 5 star review using words like fantastic, incredible, stunning and beautiful.
I agree with all that. But why only a 3 star rating surely it's worth more than that.

Hello WJ Barnett. You say I gave a "5 star review" but in my opinion this DVD would have been worth a maximum of four stars with a different soundtrack, and perhaps David Attenborough as narrator. Unfortunately, for me, the music took the edge off the imagery and I 'downgraded' my rating from four to three accordingly.
Maybe it's a DVD to watch while listening to the theme from Koyaanisqatsi ( Koyaanisqatsi/ Powaqqatsi [DVD ).
Thanks for the feedback.
