How thrilling to have Paul Temple and Steve back in my life!
As a young lad pre television pre soap I loved listening to the adventures of this oh so glamorous couple and relished the cliffhanger endings to the episode and the stirring Rimsky Korsakov sound bites that kept the action moving so daringly along and now here they are again captured on CD from the recent BBC's recreation of that original series lost to unimaginable space that is Archive.
Firstly the recreation of the sound is so amazing you could imagine that you are actually listening to the series from all those years ago. We are now so spoiled by super stereo and other sound effects that to hear, what appears to be, arcane mono sound from what would have been a grand bakelite radiogram adds to the authenticity.
The two lead actors, who sound so like the original Paul and Steve (names now forgotten) conjur up that magical world of intrigue, double-dealing, espionage and murder as do the sound effects of tinkling cocktail glasses, road accidents (in ear splitting realism) even to the necessary key in the lock and door slamming that I can only congratulate the sound team that put this little gem together.
This really is a must buy for any crime fan who longs for a bit of elegance as a relief from some of the more gritty televised realism of recent series. Paul and Steve did make a brief appearance in that medium some time back in the 70s or 80s but it just wasn't the same. Their appearance really needs to be left to the imagination of the listener.
This set would make the ideal Christmas gift and may even draw the family back together as a listening unit. My advice is to ration yourself to a chapter at a time as to over indulge might appear extravagant
