5.0 out of 5 stars What a great little movie!, 6 Mar. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Reykjavik Rotterdam [DVD] (2008) (DVD)
I was drawn to this film initially by the lead actor, Baltasar Kormákur, who in my opinion is a truly great director and actor (check out Jar City or Reykjavik 101). I found myself completely absorbed in the action - couldn't take my eyes off the screen. There are some terrific, really natural performances from all the lead cast. The film is set in equal parts in its native Iceland, on board a cargo ship, and in Rotterdam. There is just enough comedy to keep it on the light side without spoiling the undoubted drama. Don't be put off by the English subtitles - this will give you the perfect excuse to watch it again! It has been made into a Hollywood blockbuster, Contraband, but I would strongly advise watching the unadulterated undiluted original, Rekjavik Rotterdam.

Thanks for the excellent review. I am also a big fan of Icelandic culture and cinema. I saw the DVD today whilst out shopping, but will definitely buy it based on your comments. Incidentally, you might want to check out another little gem...'Noi Albinoi'

Thanks for your comments. Yes, I love Noi Albinoi too. You might want to check out "The Sea". Another gem is "A little Trip to Heaven". It's English language with American actors, but it was filmed in Iceland and directed by Baltasar Kormakur. If you like things Icelandic, you simply have to check out the TV series Naeturvaktin, Dagvaktin, and Fangavaktin, and the finale movie Mr Bjarnfredarson. Regards P.

Thanks very much indeed. I will endeavour to get all of your recommendations (I have looked at the reviews, and they all sound 'right up my alley').
Regards,
Alan
