This review is from: Crooks In Cloisters [VHS] (VHS Tape)Definitely one for the collection; I am so pleased it has been released on DVD.
"Little Walter" (Ronald Fraser) and his gang are responsible for a spate of high-profile thefts (including the smallest train robbery ever). However, their "mentor", Superintendant Mungo (Alister Williamson) is intent on catching them, as he is on a mission to "clean up". Before he catches up with them, though, they flee to an island off the Cornish coast, where they continue their nefarious activities disguised as monks.
Life is hard and physical work is abundant, with animals to feed and tend to and the land to cultivate, all the while they are printing money and "fixing" stolen goods.
Over time, they gradually become accustomed to the "simple" life, with "Bikini" (Barbara Windsor) learning to cook, "Brother Willy" (Melvyn Hayes) tending to the animals (and going down with the "Stoodle-doo" ['flu]) and even "Little Walter" learning how to milk cows!! However, all good things must come to an end (not forgetting the great British dictum in films, that crime must never be shown to pay!). Due to the folly of "Brother Squirts" (Bernard Cribbins), who is an inveterate gambler and who cannot resist putting money on his own greyhound, the "long arm" of the law begins to stretch out.
A charming story, family entertainment and one even begins to feel sorry for a bunch of crooks!
The print and sound quality are excellent. The picture is "letterboxed" (I am writing what I see, not anything about aspect ratio).
