God it all comes rushing back! I thought it was all just a bad dream, but no!Thatcher was an unmitigated disaster and despoiled the lives of millions! That's not to say the book was unbalanced. I read it as a socialist...perhaps a Tory might view the book as a vindication of Conservative policies during that period. But I was struck at how little the outlook of the modern Conservative party has changed. Socialists are usually accused of being ideologues, but here there is plenty of evidence that shows the right of the British political spectrum is just as stuck in the ideological mud. However, the book is not just a political discourse. It is also charmingly interwoven with amusing cameos of 1980s culture - from city yuppies to Falkland Yompers. All-in-all a timely reminder of my painfully long days on the dole, the end of dreams of becoming an electrician in my local pit and, of course, dreadfully embarrassing fashions.
