This is another Real Gone Jazz value offering: eight classic albums offered on four disks from the great sax player Julian `Cannonball' Adderley. They are all copyright-expired recordings from the 1950s and early 1960s.
Here's what you get on your four disks:
1. Sophisticated Swing (1957)
2. Things are getting Better - with Milt Jackson (1958)
1. Portrait of Cannonball (1958)
2. Sharpshooters (1958)
1. Cannonball Takes Charge (1959)
2. Them Dirty Blues (1960)
1. Cannonball & Coltrane (1959)
2. Cannonball Adderley and the Poll Winners (1960)
Although not an iconoclastic mould-breaker like Trane, Adderley was one of the great jazz saxophonists probably best known for his seminal modal-period sessions with Miles. His most sublime material from this important 1957-60 period was originally released on the album `Somethin' Else' which is not included here: however you do get the essentially comparable `Sharpshooters' and `Them Dirty Blues' where Adderley's fine playing is showcased to great effect.
The sound quality of these recordings is OK, notwithstanding minor criticisms from purists - though whether the `digital re-mastering' really offers any improvement over previous recordings is debatable. This is however a good deal whichever way you look at it; there's plenty of good quality jazz here on offer for not much money and if you get to like Adderley's style, you can always invest in the highest quality recordings later.
