An OK Thriller,
This review is from: Past Mortem (Paperback)Unlike Eltons other books, this one does not really try to be funny and it does well as a result of it. Other than his sitcoms, I have often found Eltons attempts at humour weak at best, so this book was always more likely to be more my thing.
As with his other books it is incredibly easy to read and you will be through it in a matter of hours.
It's a simple police thriller searching out a serial killer who kills his victims is extremely unusual ways. There is an underlying love interest between the primary police officers which adds more interest. There are some nice twists and turns along the way and the whole thing moves along at a decent pace so you never find yourself getting bored in any way.
My main gripe with this book is the odd attempts at humour. There are some moments in the book where the main character, Newsome, meets some of his old school friends and Elton feels the need to provide an old school nickname in this case, Spewsome Newsome. Now I can't imagine what sort of school Elton went to, but I can't imagine anyone in the history of education has had such a childish nickname!
It's not a book that is going to find it's way into your top ten (or even top fifty) but it's diverting in it's own way. One to read on holiday perhaps?
