This review is from: The Plough and the Stars (Faber Plays) (Paperback)
One of the great 20th century plays. Universal themes of poverty and nationalism, and ways in which the innocent and non-combatant get mortally caught in the cross fire of insurgent and resistant fighting. Superb evocation of time and place and fundamentals of the human condition which remain relevant. An original and highly seminal piece of work - should be read, and experienced in action. The writing and the engaging contradictory characters, where the women have greater understanding of actualities, whereas the men find succour in gambling, alcohol and 'the cause', are realisations of fundamental truths.
