Absolutely entertaining jazz,
This review is from: Plenty Swing, Plenty Soul (Audio CD)
Jazz pianists Cyrus Chestnut (b. 1963) and Eric Reed (b. 1970) have many things in common: deep gospel influence, full exploit of piano dynamics, great speed along the keyboard but never as a virtuosity show off, highly developed sense of rhythm, immense capacity to entertain their audience with enthusiastic music that communicates joy and passion for life. They both remind me of some great jazz pianists of the past such as Art Tatum, Erroll Garner, Horace Silver and above all Oscar Peterson. All of their qualities are even stronger in this dazzling release taped live at Dizzy's Club (New York) on March 7th, 2009, featuring both pianists (on two different pianos one in front of the other), Dezron Douglas on acoustic bass and Willie Jones III on drums. Seven tracks (total time 74 minutes), the first five well-known standards, the sixth penned by Reed and the last track co-authored by Reed and Chestnut. Totally entertaining jazz that works well as music background and becomes truly great if played loud. Very good sound quality too, even if the club was not always very silent during the recording of the show, anyway nothing to be worried about. Totally recommended if you want some amusing and swinging jazz piano!
