This review is from: Doctor Who - The Twin Dilemma [DVD] (DVD)This story, Colin Baker's first, has a terrible reputation. I think much of the problem stems from the fact the previous story (Caves of Androzani) was such an all-time classic that viewer's expectations had been raised very high. The other main gripe people have is with Baker Mk 2's Doctor behaving so abominably.
On the contrary, I think the makers of the show should be praised for taking such a bold step. Certainly as an introductory tale this story is a vast improvement over the tedious 'Castravalva', and this Doctor is from the word go a much more multi-layered and interesting personality than his predecessor. He initially tries to strangle Peri, but witness his genuine despair later on in the story when he believes she has been killed. The story, involving giant slugs, may not be an all-time great and some of the science strains credibility. And those twins (smug Adric clones complete with stupid pudding-bowl haircuts) should have their heads banged together. It looks cheap (most of that year's budget was blown going to Lanzarote) but it moves along at a brisk pace and has enough good performances and interesting goings-on to keep the viewer amused.
