Shadow Of An Empire - SUPERB!!,
This review is from: The Shadow Of An Empire (Audio CD)I'm struggling to understand how people who loved his first album are only giving this 1 or 2 stars. It is a great great album no question about it.
The first was very much a lo key folk album with great melodies, amazing finger picking, and superb lyrics. It couldn't have been improved on in that sense and the style of that album clearly wasn't something that Fionn wanted to replicate on this one.
Shadow of an empire is a much more varied and concise effort. On songs like Coat Hook, Violent Demeanour, Lines written in winter, Lord Help my poor soul and the title track his songwriting and lyrics are better than all but a couple of songs on his first LP. The much more apparent presence of an accompanying band does not detract in anyway from the fragility and beauty of his voice and lyrics.
Don't get me wrong I love his first album but I also love this one just as much. Don't listen to the people who can't recognise the greatest songwriting talent around at the moment. As for being ''the most disappointing album of 2010 thus far'' (according to one reviewer) I think this person needs to check their hearing!!

Dear B Havers
As i dont give negative votes I thought I would leave a comment. Thank you for quoting my review but you will see that it more precisely says that "This album is to my great sadness probably the most dissapointing release of 2010 thus far". I have listened to it again and retain this view despite a hearing test and purchasing a bottle of olive oil. This album is sadly neither fish nor fowl and while I agree that "lion in Winter" and Violent demeanour" are good songs in too many places he drowns in his own influences and fails to let his talent shine. As for Regan being "the greatest living song writing talent around at the moment" what a droll sense of humour you have.

Mr. B. A. Havers says:
My my you are sensitive. Leaving aside your emotions you still state that this is "probably the most dissapointing release of 2010 thus far" However I never said anything about Fionn being the greatest LIVING song writer. So in fact you have mis-quoted me. Also as you clearly take your online reviewing so seriously 'disappointing' has one 's' and two 'p's and its 'Lines written in... not Lions in.
