5.0 out of 5 stars Exellent Audio Take On A Unfinshed Tv Adventure, 27 Nov 2013
This review is from: Shada (Doctor Who) (Audio CD)
1)Paul McGanns enthusiastic Eighth Doctor whom is ready to seek adventure.
2)Romana & K9 return.
3)Good supporting cast.
4)Exellent adaption of Douglas Adam's classic story by Gary Russell.

Nothing it's a great story.

1)Due to BBC industrial action block 2 & 3 on the recording of this story were never completed, But a Video release with linking material by Tom Baker was released on Video in 1993 & dvd in 2013.
2)This tips it's hat to the unfinished story adding the Time fissure plot of the Five Doctor's that stopped the Doctor visting an old friend at the university.
3)This story was shown as a webcast via flash animation.
4) Producer on Shadas Tv production included an idea by Graham Williams who thought about adding a death penalty subplot to debate a discussion on the subject as how the civilized Timelords would deal with this scenario & treat it's prisoner's on Shada.
5)The CD contains a additional scene when Skagra is integrating the Doctor past, Clips can be heard from several Tv & Big Finish story's.

Audio Info.
2xCD of 6 episodes, Running time 130 minutes.

The Doctor visits Romana & K9 explaining they have some unfinished business to attend too & the trio set off to Earth to meet up with a old friend of the Doctors Professor Chronotis (Edward Fox).

The plot centres on the Timelords whom have built a prison on a lost planet named Shada too keep power mad dictators who threaten the universe imprisoned for eternity.

But Skagra (Andrew Sachs) is a up & coming ruthless dictator needs assistance from one of the prisons inmates who knows were Shada actually is but is unable to find anybody who remembers except discovers an aged Timelord who has retired to earth to become a university Professor & live out his final regeneration in peace my have the answer.

But Skagra arrives on planet earth determined to retrieve Shadas whereabouts from Professor Chronotis by any means necessary.

But can the Professors old friend the Doctor who along with Romana & K9 prevent Skagra obtaining the information needed & save the Professor from Skagras diabolical plans for Shada?

Broadcast as a webcast in December 2005 via flash animation this 6 part story is now available on audio & has been adapted from Douglas Adam's original script to incorporate the Eighth Doctor accordingly by Gary Russell.

This is a excellent but eccentric story that has a wonderful cast in Edward Fox, Andrew Sachs, Melvyn Hayes, Hannah Gordon & Susannah Harker all of which play there roles to perfection.

Gary Russell's adaption is full of zest for adventuring & yet keeps the source original material only adding a new opening to accommodate the Fourth Doctors absence.

Paul McGann & Lalla Ward bounce off each other excellently in this adventure & is the second time of working together at Big Finish in Doctor Who with the first being Neverland.

It's nice to hear the return of K 9 voiced superbly by John Leeson who brings a certain nostalgia to this adventure.

This is a exellent adapted for audio of a unfinished Tv story by the superb Gary Russell & is a highly recommended audio adaption for fan's of Doctor Who.

Excellent review (you must spend an age gathering all this research!). It just seems strange that Tom Baker didn't play the Doc. I imagine it must give a different feel to the story, compared to the novel. sStill going to be interest to hear the it.
Oh also, in the "5 Doctors" episode, there's a scene with Bakers punting on the river, is this taken from a scene from Shada that was filmed? According to the novel they did film some early shots.

This might be of interest to youDoctor Who: The Legacy Collection (Shada/More Than 30 Years In The TARDIS) [DVD]

At the time Tom didn't want to do any audiobooks as the Fourth Doctor & as only done them recently via AudioGo then Big Finish as Louise Jameson talked him into giving them a go.

Tom now having time of his life as the Doctor again.

I'm a bit of a Whovian lol & reviewed many Big Finish audiobooks.

It's interesting how many versions of 'Shada' there are now. It's had a great legacy. I remember chatting to Lalla Ward about it, saying I can't decide which version's the right one. lol.

I doubt they'll do a new 'Shada' with Tom Baker in it since Paul McGann's already taken his place. But Big Finish do come up with the goods in producing Dougy Adams-like material, and I'm sure we as fans look forward to that as does Tom who relishes stuff like that as it suits his Doctor. Tim.
