4.0 out of 5 stars amy's not crazy, 16 April 2007
This review is from: Passing for Normal: Tourette's, OCD and Growing Up Crazy (Pocket Books) (Paperback)
Amy suddenly develops tics and twitches at the age of 8, she also suffers from OCD. Her father suffers from OCD too and it looks like his mother also had it. No-one realises this till Amy is finally diagnosed in her 20's with both OCd and Tourettes. When she first starts with the twitching her father tells her to stop it and says she looks crazy. When amy finally decides to seek help for her conditions she is told that there is an hereditary gene in some families and it can lead to either Tourettes or OCD or in Amy's case both conditions. Amy has a sense of humour about it all and manages to hold down a job even before she starts taking the medication which helps a lot with both conditions. She is triumphant when first told she has Tourettes and instead of waiting to be referred for further treatment leaves the Dr's office to go and call her dad to tell him, she's not crazy but has a neurological disorder. As her treatments progress she then realises why her dad is physically incapable of driving the car when there are pennies or post-it notes on the dashboard, he too has OCD. He then goes to a doctor and admits that he has the same condition as Amy. But more is to come, when they start to clear out her paternal granny's flat, they find 20$ notes hiden everywhere and in the closet everything has its place so it seems the gene has run rampant through this family. A really good read and Amy's sense of humour makes it unputdownable, i read this book in a couple of days and highly recommend it.
