This review is from: Metal Shifters [DVD] (DVD)Metals Shifters, also known as Iron Invader, premiered on the Syfy channel on February 12, 2011. It's the story of an extra-terrestrial bacteria/mould that crashes to Earth, landing in a small town. Local lads Ethan & Jake (Kavan Smith) see a piece of the crashed satellite and bring it to Earl who runs the scrap yard. Earl agrees to buy the satellite piece as he could use it in his scrap sculptures, the latest of which is Iron Golem, a humanoid collection of car-parts found around his scrap yard. The mould spreads from the satellite & infects the Iron Golem which then proceeds to run riot through the town killing people for the Iron in their blood. Will the small-town gang manage to stop this abomination?
Well, it's not a bad script, had this been on TV I probably would of watched it. But the production values are extremely low, there are a couple of obvious plot-holes and some of the acting is pretty terrible. The CGI on the Iron Golem is laughable, it looks like a poor man's Transformers, even the DVD case has been designed to imitate the cover of the original (check it out, blue top-half, silver stripe of text in a square font, then an orange lower half; it's an obvious attempt at misdirection).
But let me assure you, this is no Transformers. The mould/bacteria stuff lives after the metal parts have been blown apart, yet for some reason dies when you hit it with an axe (an antibacterial axe maybe?) and for some reason the mould knows how to reassemble the Iron Golem into perfect humanoid form and also, why on Earth (pun intended) would it target humans as it's primary source of Iron? I mean it ended up in a scrap yard, you would have thought it would be in mould-heaven.
Anyhow, low-budget CGI & acting, entertaining in places but ultimately, rather uninspired.
