A great title for medical students who want the detail required for statistics & epidemiology in medical school exams!,
This review is from: Basic Statistics and Epidemiology: A Practical Guide (Paperback)
This book though not primarily aimed at the medical student is an ideal book if you wish to have simple detail about the common statistical terms that you will encounter during your undergraduate training and in exams.
The first part of the book which deals on the whole with the statistical terms is at times beyond the scope of what a medical student would be expected to know. The detail however is not mind-boggling and as such any medical student should be able to keep up with what is being said and in actual fact, reading this section would help you even when looking at specific tests such as chi-squared. Other basic definitions of terms such as mean, median and mode for example are very useful as these are some of the easy mark questions that can come up in the statistics part of our exam where you will be asked to calculate these (or read them off the paper).
The second part of the book which deals with the epidemiology is perhaps the most useful component of the book and is the most commonly appearing in our examinations. The book gives you clear and concise definitions & overviews of each of the study types including the pros and cons of them, something that commonly arises in PBL objectives and is often neglected, also a favoured topic for easy marks in the MCQs on the exam paper.
Finally the section at the end of the book that contains numerous questions that help you to apply each of the concepts is ideal to test whether you understand these tests properly, something that you often don't realise till you enter the exam room.
In summary I would highly encourage any student who wants a book that clearly and concisely covers much of what you are expected to know on this part of the undergraduate medical curriculum to consider this title. Perhaps initially you could get it from your library in print or e-version and then if you agree with me, purchase yourself a copy of this title.
