This review is from: NEW TASTIWAVE TASTY WAVE 6 PIECE MICROWAVE COOKWARE SET + RECEIPE BY CHEF TONY (Kitchen & Home)
I have a Whirlpool family chef Whirlpool Family Chef FT339 Full Combi Microwave, Satina Mist microwave and use the grill and combination cooking features quite a bit. Using a microwave cooking plate helps to crisp up meats, roast veg etc and as mine was getting a little old I was looking for replacements. The Tastiwave plates seemed interesting as there seemed to be combinations of plates and lids (which there is) and at the price seemed worth a punt. What I hadn't realised was that this is a cooking system with the black / grey part being a super heat hot plate which is heated up in the microwave. Different. When the plates and lid sit on top of this unit it is actually quite high, hence the reason for mentioning my microwave at the top.
This works by your preheating the base with one of the brown cooking bases on top for 2 minutes. This gets super hot. You then add in your meats, veg, whatever and add either a weighted flat lid (which also heats and cooks from the top) or the dome lid for more substantial things / or if you're doing more liquid things or as I found high oil meats. Then you microwave again to cook the food.
First two times I tried this I was a bit worried about the smell of plastic / metal plus also as I'd done sausage and burgers, smoke from the fat in the meats as I'd not added any cooking oil. Subsequently, plastic smell has gone with use; have adjusted times, tried the drip tray, and learned to use this. Now does fantastic juicy chicken and things with good flavour as things are browned on the metal plates. There is a nice sizzling sound as things cook. I can also use these plates without the base heater when I want to grill.
I've not tried the receipe book - mainly as it's American and has cups as quantities - but there seems to be a reasonable selection of choices in there. I did wonder if this might end up being a gadget in my kitchen cupboard but it is useful especially if you want something roasted without heating up a whole oven.
