Enjoyable but not brilliant,
This review is from: The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian (2-Disc Collector's Edition) [DVD] (DVD)
As an avid reader of C S Lewis as a child, I eagerly anticipated the release of the films. I enjoyed the first and cannot say I didn't like the second film, however I think some aspects of it hampered my enjoyment of Prince Caspian. C S lewis is a very unique writer and I think having the actors use modern dialect in the film lost the magic a bit as anyone who had read the books expects the Pevensie children to speak with proper English accents and to use 1940's dialect. If you have never read the books then I doubt you would notice this, however there is a certain magical air to them which was not portrayed as well in this film until the final scenes and I honestly think modernising the characters was part of this. I also found putting in romance between Susan and Caspian an unneccessary and irritating extra. That apart, there are many good things too ~Eddie Izzard's Reepicheep, the delightful Lucy Pevensie and the excellent costumes but most of all the beautifully haunting song at the end of the film when the children return to England which is very moving. I watched this many times as my children of 7 and 4 loved it. I would still recommend a look as it is a pleasant way to spend a couple of hours and is a good film for children of both sexes.
