not the best place to start for the layman,
This review is from: John Calvin: A Biography (Paperback)
This book is probably not the best place to start if you are looking for a readable and easy to understand introduction to John Calvin. In the first 2 chapters the author goes through a great deal of technical historical knowledge that, unless you are educated in that area, you will struggle to get through. The book gets easier to read and more interesting after that though, and presents a wonderful portrait of John Calvin.
So for a biography of John Calvin more tailored to the layman look elsewhere. A few other possible options to consider are John Piper's short biography of John Calvin (Amazon.co.uk ISBN 184474356X) or a 128 page shorter biography of Calvin by THL Parker (called 'Portrait of Calvin') that DesiringGod have recently brought back into print (see Amazon.com ISBN 0979952670). The new definitive biography of John Calvin is meant to be 'Calvin' by Bruce Gordon. Robert Reymond has also done a biography.

Thank you Gardener for your helpful response. I am very interested in finding more information about the life of John Calvin and don't really want to jump in feet first into a lot of heavy theology and history. So thank you for the advice and recommendations that you submitted in your review on John Calvin: A Biography (paperback).
