So great on so many levels I don't know where to start.,
This review is from: Here Comes the Boom (Blu-ray + UV Copy) (Blu-ray)
Probably only a 4 star film, but I loved Here Comes the Boom and thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it; and not just because it combined my two main passions of music and fighting.
I enjoyed it because it was immensely funny and had me laughing out loud on several occasions. I enjoyed it because it had a genuinely engaging (although predictably formulaic) story. And I enjoyed it because it had a brilliant cast.
As well as some great cameos and some brilliant faces as extras, there were brilliant performances in supporting roles from non other than Henry 'Fonzarelli' Winkler and dutch fighter Bas 'El Guapo' Rutten.
Winkler displayed incredible acting skills and comic ability in his role and made me think it's a real shame we haven't seen him in more roles since Happy Days. And he isn't the only great supporting cast member.
Bas, who is probably my favourite all time fighter, has made the transition from ring to screen with ease. It seems this naturally charismatic man has a flair for acting as well as a knocking people out... If you've ever seen his bar fighting video on YouTube, expect more of the same funny moments from the big bald headed Dutchman.
I thought the fight scenes where more dynamic and handled better than the fight scenes in the film The Fighter, and I was certainly more emotionally invested in the final showdown, even if Rampage Jackson fans will see the final move coming a mile off.
All in all, Here Comes the Boom was knock out on every level and a must watch if you're after a comedy - regardless of if you like mixed martial arts or not. This was just a nice, heart-warming comedy that - for once - was actually very funny. And not only that it was handled brilliantly by all involved.
