Great Sixth Doctor Novel By Terrance Dicks,
This review is from: Doctor Who: Players: 50th Anniversary Edition (Paperback)
Players is a unique story written by Classic Who writer & former script editor Terrance Dicks whom has a knack for turning out great Doctor Who adventures.
Here Dicks is writing for The Sixth Doctor & Peri who are caught up in a chain of historic event's surrounding Winston Churchill whom will one day become Prime Minister eventually leading Great Britain to victory in World War 2 but here a unseen force that is meddling with history trying to change Churchills timeline from the Boar War to the Abdication crisis.
Just who is trying to change these historic events from ever happening & why?
The Doctor & Peri become embroiled in these dramatic event's & is suspicious of the strange goings on & deduces that it's a entity whom call themselves Players who are in fact using Winston Churchill as a pawn in what they view history as being little more than a game for there amusement.
Can The Sixth Doctor & Peri play the Player's at the own game or will historic event's be changed forever & does the Doctor have enough moves up his sleeve to defeat them?
Terrance Dicks captures the Sixth Doctor well here although Dicks writes the Sixth Doctor's arrogance he brings out a cunning intelligence to the Sixth Doctor's character not really seen in the tv series & makes his personality far more mellow & less bombastic than he was on tv.
The plot is a intriguing one as it involves Winston Churchill & a race of strange beings called Player's who infact return in a sequel to this adventure called Doctor Who:Endgame again written by Terrance Dicks.
This is a great novel full of intrigue & a well written enemy in the Player's whom make a clever foil for Ole Sixey & Peri.
This is another great novel in the 50th Anniversary range of Re-released Doctor Who novels celebrating the Doctor's Golden Anniversary in 2013 & is a recommended read for Doctor Who fan's & keen reader's.

Thanks for the review - there's so much Dr Who material around, I'm only going to look at books etc that have had positive reviews from actual readers.

I didn't enjoy this one so much - seemed rather formulaic as a Doctor Who story, and a truly odd choice to be representative of the Sixth Doctor in the 50th anniversary celebrations, given that it doesn't truly stand alone. The Players are a good plot idea, but I'm not sure they were used to full advantage in these stories.
Definitely not the best Sixth Doctor story, I feel sure ... surely?
Great review but!
