So what happened?,
This review is from: So Beautiful Or So What (Audio CD)
This is the first Paul simon album that I have not bought since his first solo album oh so many years ago. Having felt a drop off in the quality of his recorded material over the last two releases I borrowed it off a friend to check it out. On the way home from friend I listened to it in the car and was through the disc once and on to the third track again before I realised it had restarted. Unlike most of his work this album seems to have no structure. There is no feeling of satisfaction when it comes to the end and a looking forward to listening to it again. There are to me no favourite or outstanding tracks. It's what I imagine would be the music playing in the lifts at the UN.
The lyrics are banal and the musicians don't seem to have been allowed to play beyond a certain level in case they overshadow Mister Simon. No wonder he is touring Graceland.
There is so much worth listening to in his back catalogue. American Tune, Hearts and Bones with that amazing bass playing, Congratulation off his first solo album. I'm sure anyone who has followed his career can list their favourites. There is not a single track on So What that is worth including in any list. If it were possible I would have given it no stars at all and I am so glad that I did not buy it.
My friend didn't like it either and said that I could keep it. I gave it to the local library.

It's a shame you're stuck in the past...
