Fantastic Netbook, But Amazon Has Wrong Picture!,
This review is from: Samsung NC110 10.1 inch Netbook - Black (Intel Atom N570 1.66GHz, RAM 1GB, HDD 320GB, LAN, WLAN, BT, Webcam, Windows 7 Starter) (Personal Computers)
This is a fantastic netbook - everything you want from a portable machine for simple functions. Considering the NC110 is also available (bizarrely for a higher price...?) with only 1.5 GHz and 250GB hard drive, this is a steal.
This is the Samsung NC110 with 1.66 GHz and 320GB hard drive, comes with 1GB RAM. I upgraded the RAM memory to 2GB (using DDR3 from Amazon, costing only another £9) simply by unscrewing the memory section on the base and replacing the RAM and it is even better. Fantastic. I find the speed is fairly comparable with my high-end laptop considering the price of the machine and with Windows 7 starter, it is functional and nice to look at.
Word processing and internet browsing (I use Chrome) are really great and for viewing pictures it is quite good too. Obviously the screen is not hi-res enough for real quality in this department, but it is good enough.
A couple of issues, though: I had to download updated drivers from Samsung website myself - without this the touchpad wasn't as good and didn't have the scroll function. Also, it says 320GB hard drive but only about 290-ish of this is usable. When viewing video (for example on YouTube) it struggles with HD and the sound can flicker a little - but I wasn't expecting much at all so what it can do impressed me quite a bit. Also, obviously because it's a netbook no disc drive so you'll have to use the supplied system restore CD ROM via USB if anything goes wrong.
I use it for word processing, internet browsing and photo storage when I'm on the go and I love it. The battery can last up to 10 hours according to Samsung - depending on what you're doing, I'd say more like between 5-8, which is perfect for what I need. Sleep mode is quite impressive for saving battery power too and it boots up in what seems like a mere second when you re-open it from this mode.
BUT Amazon listing is wrong! The photos are all correct at time of writing (5/12/11) EXCEPT for the first picture, which is a photo of a completely different machine. I saw the NC110 machine in a shop to test it out before I committed to buying it online, but the image will be very misleading for a buyer who hasn't seen it. The outer shell is shiny plastic and the lower keyboard element of the machine is a matte sort of plastic-y material - not the slim, brushed metal you see in the first photo which is of a completely different laptop! So beware if you haven't seen or tried the machine before purchase!

If you go to the Crucial website they will detect which RAM you need and sell it to you as well.

Sorry to comment here on your comment, but Amazon haven't got a general area. The blurb says it comes in a "choice of stylish colours"; well maybe it does somewhere but not here, just black as far as my iPad shows on the colour selector. Can anyone clarify please if there is a choice of colours? Thank you.

I recall there were a few different options available: I think black, white, blue and red. I saw a couple in the shop before purchase and the black seemed by far the most stylish because the keyboard matches the hood whereas on the blue, red etc., the lid colour is blue but the keyboard is white. Depends on preference of course.

a) Colour: thanks F-Bird. I'm off the iPad on on computer now, and still the choice is only black; presumably you're talking about buying via website.
2) memory: thanks JohnM. There's obviously a lot of 'people who bought this also bought', and a couple of memory sticks are listed; but to be sure which one to get I wrote to Crucial and they say to contact Samsung. I'd LIKE to get the extra put in before they ship -- why can't they suggest that? I don't want to buy the book, wait for that to arrive, plug in to Crucial, or whoever's website and have them diagnose which bloody stick I need. This seems SOOOO simple.

I have this laptop and it seems to have a scroll function if you swipe your finger up or down the very right hand edge of the touch pad, it's just not marked. hope this helps :) also , thanks for the tip about the memory, that improved things dramatically

The higher priced 1.5GHz one is a dual core Atom CPU. This one is the single core version... (Atom N450 as opposed to the Atom N550). Hope that helps anyone...
