Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Unexploded (Hardcover)
I can't remember the last time I audibly gasped whilst reading a book? I enjoyed Unexploded so much more than I expected. Historical romance isn't my first choice of reading matter, but then this is hardly a conventional romance. At times the prose was quite beautiful, and yet the subject matter was often ugly and dark. This was a compelling, uncomfortable read, and I couldn't put it down.
I have now read 4 of the 2013 Man Booker longlist. I very much expect Unexploded to be on the shortlist. Should it win? I have read the last 6 winners and think I prefer this to any of them! But is it better than Jim Crace's Harvest?

"Harvest" is, indeed, excellent. But I was fascinated by "Five Star Billionaire" and, truth be told, my favorite so far is "The Spinning Heart". Thanks for your review and thoughts on the Booker.

I loved Spinning Heart, and was disappointed it wasn't on the shortlist. I think Harvest is the likely winner. I wouldn't be disappointed if A Tale for the Time Being won, but I think Jim Crace's novel has the edge and the momentum. But what do I know? I didn't rate Hilary Mantel's winning books at all...
