This review is from: Blame It On The Night (Audio CD)
These days barely a week goes by when a classic and rare album from the 60s/70s isnt reissued in some format or other. This one has been a long time coming though, and is the first issue on cd as far as i know. Essential listening and Cherry Red have done a marvellous job on it. Disc one contains the original album versions of the songs plus a b-side, an alternative version and 2 live tracks from Hyde Park in 1974. Absolutely brilliant, hard to top and an excellent follow up to Marjory Razorblade, stand out tracks including River of Sin, Sign of the Times, the title track and Witch.
Alternatively titled River of Sin, Cd 2 consists of rough mixes of the album tracks which are as good as the originals, the stripped down sound and looseness of the recordings perhaps suiting the songs even better. Appended to the original album tracks are an alternative mix and 2 out-takes from the album. An absolutely splendid package, recommended to newcomers and Kevin Coyne enthusiasts alike.
Even better, Amazons current auto-rip version, free with the purchase of the cd, features a cd2 which is totally different to the cd2 that comes with the set. It features a number of BBC recordings, John Peel and Bob Harris sessions and live tracks from a BBC concert in Golders Green 1974. Buy it new from Amazon and get 3 cds worth of material for around a tenner. Cant be bad!
